Johnny Rodriguez Passed Away On May 9, 2025, At The Age Of 73
George Strait is mourning the loss of a fellow Texan and one of his personal role models, Johnny Rodriguez.
Johnny’s daughter, Aubry, shared the news that her father passed away on Friday (May 9) at the age of 73. She wrote:
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Johnny Rodriguez, who left us peacefully on May 9th, surrounded by family. Dad was not only a legendary musician whose artistry touched millions around the world, but also a deeply loved husband, father, uncle, and brother whose warmth, humor, and compassion shaped the lives of all who knew him.”
Johnny was known for blending Latin sounds into his country hits, and often sang some of the lyrics in Spanish. He broke out onto the scene in 1973 with the release of his debut single, “Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through),” which reached the Top 10.
Many other hits followed, including the chart-toppers “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico,” “Love Put a Song in My Heart,” and “Just Get Up and Close the Door.”
Johnny also released a famous cover of the Eagles’ “Desperado” in 1977. His version reached the fifth spot on the Hot Country Songs chart.
George Strait Shares His Heartbreak After Learning That Johnny Rodriguez Died
George Strait released his debut major label single, “Unwound,” in 1981. By then, Johnny Rodriguez was a well-established country music superstar.
Watching Johnny inspired George to chase his own musical dreams. Because of this, George felt moved to honor Johnny and share what he meant to him after he learned about his death.
In an emotional statement he shared on social media, George wrote:
“Norma and I are so sad about Johnny’s passing. He was an inspiration to me from the beginning. Being from South Texas myself, it gave me so much hope knowing that he had become such a huge success…that maybe there was hope for a guy like me. What a great talent he was.”
George ended his message with a heartfelt signoff: “God bless his family, friends and fans. You’ll be missed, amigo.”
There’s no denying the impact Johnny Rodriguez had on the country music community during his decades-long career. On top of inspiring a young George Strait, he influenced dozens of other artists who followed in his footsteps.
We too, join George in sending our prayers to Johnny’s family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
